Description:

GREGG'S CAVALRY COMMAND HOLDS OUT DURING THE BATTLE OF GLOBE TAVERN
A good war-date Union officer's battle letter, 1p. oblong 12mo., written by Lt. Thomas J. Gregg, Co. F, 6th Penn. Cavalry (Rush's Lancers) as aide de camp on the staff of his brother Brig. Gen. David Mc. Gregg, "Head Quart 2nd C. C., Aug. 26, 1864, in pencil. In part: "…the day after we had a hard and desperate fight. It lasted from five in the afternoon until nine at night. The fight…was a fresh success for this Div. I never saw anything half so beautiful as the night fighting. It was all in an open field. We held their cavalry and infantry for four hours. Many a poor soldier's death tells of the severity of the engagement . I hardly expected that Dave and myself would pass through without injury…he has [as] always…proved himself a great and skillful general. You hear little of our doings as we do not have a reporter…we held part of the entrenchments. Dave was so successful that Genl. Hancock after the fight telegraphed to Genl. Meade of the splendid fighting of Gregg's Cavalry. They being the only part of the whole line which held…and did not leave until the enemy got in our rear. When Dave was compelled to give the order to retreat this morning Genls. Hancock and Gibon told Dave in the hearing of some…he was deserving of a Maj. Genl. Command…we are now at the House on the Plank road…". Very good.
