Description:

GREER GARSON''S FIRST FILM CONTRACT
(1904 - 1996) British-American actress who was very popular during the Second World War, being listed by the Motion Picture Herald as one of America''s top-ten box office draws from 1942-46. Most important partly-printed D.S. "Greer Garson", 2pp. 22" x 8 1/2", [London, n.d. but late 1937], in which Carson signs her first contract to appear in films for MGM. The contract is between Garson and Loew''s Inc., the parent company of MGM, and it contracts Greer: "...for a period of one year commencing upon your arrival at our studios in Culver City...and you agree to leave London...[at] the end of the present run...of the Play ''Old Music'' in which you are taking part...". She is further guaranteed $1,000/week for forty weeks, and the studio has an option for five more years at increasing levels of pay. Boldly signed by Greer at the conclusion, also signed by MGM vice president BENNY THAU (1898-1983) who would also carry on an affair with Garson early in her film career. Staple and file holes at top, else very good. In 1937 Louis B. Mayer, the head of MGM, was visiting London on business and he passed one particular evening at the theater watching "Old Music." On the stage before him he saw Garson and determined to sign her.
