Description:

'GREAT ESCAPE' P.O.W. PILOT'S SPITFIRE RELIC
An superb relic associated with Stalag Luft III POW R.A.F. Flt. Lt. Alexander B. Corbett, being a 23 x 9.5 in. section of the Spitfire N3116 tail vertical stabilizer. This aircraft was the one flown by Canadian Corbett when he crashed or was show down and taken prisoner on August 15, 1941. The relic, in light 'dug' condition, bears a very old painted attribution: 'SPITFIRE N3116 14TH AUGUST [sic] 1940. F/LT. A. B. CORBETT. STALAG LUFT-3' The relic sits atop a hand-carved fitted and finished wood base and was once part of the collection of a museum dedicated to the 'Dambusters' and the RAF owned by our consignor. Stalag Luft III was, of course, the scene of the famous 'Great Escape' with tunnels 'Tom', 'Dick', and 'Harry'.
