Description:

350. ULYSSES S. GRANT Good content A.L.S. "U.S. Grant" on his fine monogrammed letterhead, 2pp. 8vo., Liverpool, May 29, 1777 to A. B. Walker, the Mayor of Liverpool requesting the inclusion of Adam Badeau in an official function. In full: "In acknowledging courtesies already received from the citizens of Liverpool and yourself personally will you permit me to ask that Gen. Badeau Consul Gen. of the U.S. at London, and formerly my Aide, may be included in your invitation in the occasion of my next visit, June 28th". Badeau served as an aide to Grant during the Civil War, and as a diplomat in England during Grant's presidential administrations. Light creases and soiling, mounting remnants on verso of last page, else very good. Grant left office in March 1877, with a few thousand dollars saved and a desire to see the world. On May 17 he sailed with his family for Liverpool, England, on the first leg of a journey around the world. Everywhere he was well received, not as the former president of the United States, but as the hero of the Civil War. After two years of travel, Grant finally returned home. $800 - 1,200
