"U.S. Grant" as Major General, 1p. 4to., "Headquarters, Department of the Tennessee", Millikens Bend, La, Apr. 14, 1863 to Wisconsin Gov. Edward Salomon. In part: "...I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication addressed to Maj. Gen. [Samuel R.] Curtis...referred to me...in reference to the Descriptive list of Private Idell, 14th Wisconsin Infantry Volunteers...I have caused the matter to be investigated, and have this day forwarded to Private Idell at Mound City Hospital, his Descriptive Roll and Account for Pay and Clothing, together with your letter on the subject. I enclose herewith, for your information, a copy of the letter of Capt. [William I.] Henry, Co. E, 14th Wis. Vol...". Very good. Pvt. Isiah R. Idell was at the time a patient at Mound City near Cairo, Ill. while Grant was in the early stages of preparation for his succesful Vicksburg campaign. Idell's regiment fought with distinction at Shiloh and Corinth, and lost 107 men in the May 22, 1863 assault on the Confederate lines at Vicksburg.
