Description:

GRANT'S ESCORT REPORTS ON THE BATTLES FOR PETERSBURG
War-date Union officer's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo. by 1st Lt. Maurice Leyden, [POW Darbytown Road, Va., 10/07/64, confined Libby Prison & Salisbury, N. C.], Co. B, 3rd New York Cav., "In the field near Petersburg, Va.", June 17, 1864. In part: "…we saddled our horses…and crossed the Appomattox before daylight-marched towards Petersburgh-had two severe fights. In one our Col. (S. H. Mix) was wounded, left on the field and taken prisoner. He died that same night…poor fellow. It was the first fight that he ever attempted to lead us in and he lost his life…we went up to the front yesterday within sight and two miles of Petersburgh. Genls. Grant, Burnside, Hancock, Wright and others…were present-hard fighting all day. Our division went to the front with Genl. Grant, but we did not see him again until this morning. I am tired and worn out…we may be ordered out again. A battle has just commenced in front of Petersburgh-it is a severe one. I can not…think for the roar of artillery. We are out of reach of the rebs…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Near fine.
