121. GRANT'S BROTHER-IN-LAW - A PRISONER OF THE CONFEDERATES Fine content manuscript L.S. by the private secretary for Gov. Milledge Luke Bonham, B. F. Arnold, 1p. 4to. on Executive Dept. letterhead, Columbia, June 28, 1864 to Confederate Brig. Gen. WILLIAM A. QUARLES who was then commanding forces at Mobile. Arthur writes concerning the jailing of John C. Dent, the brother Julia Dent Grant and brother-in law of Ulysses S. Grant. Dent lived in Confederate territory and was held as a Union sympathizer, though in actuality he was a supporter of the Confederacy and made no effort to hide the fact once he was captured! Arthur writes, in part: "...By direction of his Excellency the Governor I send you the enclosed copy of a letter received from John C. Dent who is now a prisoner here, at the request of the President [Davis], in the charge of the Governor of this State. If you can obtain possession of [the] articles mentioned in Mr. Dent's letter, the Governor requests that you will send them to him...he will see that proper disposition is made of them...". On verso appears an A.E.S. by Quarles (1825-1893), who led a brigade through the Atlanta Campaign and was captured at Franklin. He writes: "Brigade Hd. Qrs. Walthall's Division Stewart's Corps July 9, 1864 Resp'y forwarded to Maj. Gen'l Maury for his action. Wm. A. Quarles Brig. Genl". Six days later Major Gen. DABNEY H. MAURY (1822-1900) in Mobile pens a further forwarding endorsement. Ultimately, the final endorsement from an officer in charge of cavalrymen who captured Dent indicates that he had no idea of the whereabouts of Dent's "valuables".
