Description:

GRANT REWARDS HIS "OLD GUARD" FROM THE 1880 CONVENTION
Heavy bronze medallion, 2 7/8" diameter, on the obverse displaying Grant in profile with intertwined laurel leaves at bottom, all surrounded by the 36 ballot count results taken at the 1880 Republican Convention. The verso of the medal bears in relief: "Commemorative of the 36 Ballots of The Old Guard for Ulysses S. Grant For President. Republican Convention Chicago June 1880.". This piece was cast in 1881 by Grant's loyal supporters who stuck by him through 36 ballots as Grant attempted to win an unprecedented third nomination for President. Of course, Garfield prevailed. The medals were individually inscribed; this one was issued to JACOB TRIEBER (1853-1927), the first Jew to serve as a federal judge in the United States and a strong advocate of civil rights. The most striking thing about these medals is that, according to a contemporary article and family lore, they were struck from the last cannon fired at Appomattox on April 9, 1865! A tiny hole has been drilled at top, reason unknown, else fine and displaying a lovely patina. A superb historic relic.
