Description:

(GRANT IS APPOINTED GENERAL OF THE ARMY)
Fine content retained copy of a letter sent by JOHN G. NICOLAY (1832-1901), Abraham Lincoln's private secretary, to 'W. Richards', Chief Clerk of the Adjutant General's Office in Baltimore, 'Executive Mansion'. April 14, 1864 - one year to the day before Lincoln's shooting at Ford's Theater. Richards had completed a fine calligraphy copy of the 'Joint Resolution to Lieutenant General Grant' and has asked Nicolay about its disposition. Nicolay responds: 'The President further directs me to express to you his high admiration of the artistic beauty of your work both in the design and execution of the elaborate text, and illustrated capitals of your manuscript...' Folds, one small stain, else very good. Lincoln's praise indicates that Grant was indeed given the referenced document. On March 10, 1864, President Lincoln formally appointed Grant to the grade of Lieutenant-General of the Army, a position previously held by only George Washington and Winfield Scott (by brevet).
