Description:

GRANDFATHER INVOKES JEFFERSON AND ADAMS IN MANUSCRIPT ADVISE TO HIS GRANDAUGHTER
A good early American grandfather's bound advice booklet written for his granddaughter "Sarah", approx. 44pp. 12mo., paper wraps which have several paper labels attached on the inside front and rear covers. Many of the grandfather's missives are short and sweet giving good advice to his young granddaughter including some historical note: "…Adams & Jefferson died the fourth of July 1826. President Monroe died the 4th of July 1831…the last words of Thomas Jefferson were. 'I resign my soul of my God & my daughter to my country.' John Adams near his end roused by the fire of the cannon & being told the people were rejoicing for the 4th of July said: 'It is a great & glorious day' and expired with the words, 'Independence forever.'…when the noise of the firing began at midnight, the dying Monroe, opened his eyes inquiringly and when the cause was communicated to him a look of intelligence indicated that he understood what the occasion was…dear Sarah I think you will understand these instructions…I am going to write some poetry…General Marquis La Fayette. His sun rose in glory…the Rev. David Brainard was a missionary among the Indians a great many years ago. I think...you will like to read what he says of the little children learning to read…". Ink blots to covers only, else very good.
