Description:

GRACE COOLIDGE
(1879 - 1957) First Lady of the United States, wife of President Calvin Coolidge, notable for her advancement of popular causes such as the Red Cross and for her work with deaf children. Good content A.L.S. on White House letterhead a week after the President's reelection, 4pp. 8vo., Washington D.C., November 11, 1924, to Mrs. Phipps regarding the health of her son. In part: 'I am so distressed about your boy that I must ask you about him before I thank you for your telegram of congratulations. Please write and tell me how he is so I shall be thinking about you and him...I conclude it must be his heart and have ask Dr. Confal[?] if he thinks that is probably the trouble. So, you see, I am really anxious...The results of the election was more definitely than anyone had dared hope. The American people are a pretty steady going lot after all and with God's help I feel sure the President will not disappoint them. He deeply feels his responsibility...' Very fine. 'Mrs. Phipps' absolutely refers to the wife of Senator Lawrence Phipps from Colorado, a longtime Republican ally of Coolidge. As stated in the letter, one week prior to this Calvin Coolidge won a resounding victory in the 1924 election after serving in the role for a year following the death of Warren G. Harding. Likely contributing to Grace's anxiety over the state of Phipps's son, is the fact that in July of the same year, their son Calvin Jr. died from sepsis at the age of 16. Despite being terribly grief stricken at the personal loss, Grace did not shrink away from the public eye but rather continued to fill the duties of her role with distinction.
