Description:

GOUVERNEUR K. WARREN
(1830 - 1882) Union major general who fought at Antietam, Fredericksburg, and at Gettysburg, where he is credited with saving the Union left flank from being rolled up by a Confederate attack on Little Round Top. Fine association A.L.S. on Second Army Corps letterhead, 2pp. 8vo., [n.p.], Nov. 2, 1863 to Thomas W. Carpenter, the father of Thomas J. Cartwright, Jr. The younger Cartwright had been a captain in the 5th N.Y. Infantry ("Duryea's Zouaves"), and had been wounded at Big Bethel with the same bullet that struck Warren! He was wounded again at Gaines' Mill on June 27, 1862 and would die of his wounds the following Dec. 26th. Warren was close to the 19 year-old boy, and expresses his grief: "...I feel deeply the regard for me that remembers me in your prayers...For if mere Providence did seem to have me in his keeping it was on the 14th ult. and secured for us success...I still cherish the remembrance of your son whose career was so promising with all the regard I should feel for a lost brother. And dearly should we prize our homes and country for which such as he have died...". Very good, with repro photo of Warren and biographical details.
