Description:

(1886 - 1971) Wehrmacht general during World War II, recipient of the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords, commander in chief of Army Group Vistula during the Battle of Berlin. T.L.S. 'Heinrici', 1p. oblong 8vo., Waiblingen, May 16, 1966, to Dr. Charles B. Burdick. Heinrici encloses a photograph on himself (not present), and proceeds to criticize a recent book by author and historian Cornelius Ryan (likely 'The Last Battle', which chronicles the Battle of Berlin). Heinrici states that he personally never considered Heinrich Himmler's attempts to open communications with the Allies as treason, and that Ryan's portrayal of generals Busse and von Trotha as being 'under Hitler's spell' does not reflect reality. Furthermore, he states that the much-repeated story of Gen. Wilhelm Keitel dismissing Hienrici in a forest near Berlin for moving his troops contrary to Keitel's orders is 'a fairy tale'. Signed at the conclusion in blue ink, along with his rank. File holes at left margin, else very good. Also present is a retained copy typed letter from Burdick to Heinrici, thanking him for his correspondence and encouraging him to write his memoirs, as it could clear up many misconceptions about the final days of the war. Two pieces.
