Description:

(1811 - 1885) Confederate brigadier general of the 16th Georgia Volunteers. He led it during the subsequent Peninsula Campaign, Second Battle of Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and the Gettysburg Campaign. At Gettysburg, the 16th Georgia was among the troops that were poised for a late attack on Little Round Top, but were recalled by Lt. Gen. James Longstreet. His brigade also fought at the Battle of the Wilderness, fighting stubbornly until exhausting its ammunition. Rare war-date A.L.S. as colonel, 1p. 8vo., [n.p., n.d. but Jan. 26 or 27, 1862], to the wife of a mutual friend, an unidentified surgeon in Cobb's Legion. Bryan's letter is incorporated within that 11p. letter, dated Jan. 26 and 27, 1862. Bryan writes, in part: '...I write to tell you why you neither heard from Anna or myself during my visit to Georgia. It was uncertain what time I would leave, as my father's death rendered it necessary...to have my leave [of] absence extended...I left home with only a day's notice which was too short a time to write to you and have any thing sent back for me to bring back to the Dr...Please present my kind regards to Inez, and accept much love for yourself...' The doctor's letter contains largely family and business-related content, with some mention of Cobb and hope that the war would end soon. The accompanying envelope is addressed to a 'Mrs. E. I Eldridge', so a bit of research may reveal the doctor's identity. Fine condition.
