Description:

GONZALO DE QUESADA AROSTEGUI
(1868 – 1915) Cuban founding father, one of the key architects of the Cuban independence movement, along with his great friend Jose Marti, during the late 19th century. In 1900, he became Cuba's Special Commissioner to the United States. In 1901, he was a member of the Constitutional Convention. He entered the diplomatic service and became the Cuban ambassador to the United States. Fine content A.D.S., 1p. 8vo., [n.p., likely Cuba], 1900, in Spanish. He writes of his friend, JOSE MARTI (1853–1895), Cuban national hero and an important figure in Latin American literature. Through his writings and political activity, Marti became a symbol for Cuba's bid for independence and is referred to as the 'Apostle of Cuban Independence.' He also wrote about the threat of Spanish and US expansionism into Cuba. Killed in battle against Spanish troops at the Battle of Dos Ríos. In full: 'Determined to pursue the building of a Nation, for which Marti bled and died for, there has not been time to keep the promise to comprise his literary work, to honor his last will and correspond to his noble confidence. On the 5th anniversary of his heroic consecration, these pages are published as a guide for future and more permanent editions, as the founding stone of the monument to be erected by my admiration and gratitude.' Signed in full at conclusion. Likely penned by de Quesada Arostegui as a foreword to a collection of Marti's works. In just good condition with moderate toning and some marginal chips, some affecting the very small signature just above the bottom margin. Mounted. Estimated accordingly.
