Description:

GOLD NUGGET RECOVERED FROM THE S.S. CENTRAL AMERICA
The SS Central America was a sidewheel steamer that sank in a hurricane in 1857, taking with it over 400 lives and a fortune in California Gold Rush gold. Known as the 'Ship of Gold', the wreck was discovered in 1987, leading to the recovery of thousands of gold coins, ingots, and personal artifacts that provide a unique glimpse into 19th-century American life and commerce. The disaster contributed to the Panic of 1857, and the recovery of its treasure has been a significant event in both history and numismatics. A great relic from this famous wreck, a small gold nugget recovered from the Central America from a depth of 8,000 feet off the coast of North Carolina. The nugget, 0.7 grams, 'slabbed' and numbered 2470, is accompanied by a matching numbered certificate of Authenticity issued by Collectors Universe. These two items are matted with ;leaflets describing the background of the gold, the Central America, and the recovery of the treasure, and all are matted and set into an attractive gilt frame.
