Description:

1858. LARRY GOETZ (1900-1962) Baseball umpire in the NL for 22 years. A typical instance of his firm handling of dissenters came in 1956 when the Reds" Frank Robinson disputed a strike call longer than Goetz thought appropriate. The ump ordered the Giants" Steve Ridzik to pitch and called strike three while Robinson was still arguing. Great lot of 14 A.L.S.'s on postcards, blank sheets and his letterhead, 30pp. total, most 8vo., 1951-58, signed variously in full, as "Larry" and "Chico", all written to noted Major League Baseball executive and writer Frank Slocum. In part: "...I'm going to the Series so tell Charles Sefar to get me a couple [seats]...It's been a week since I wrote McPhail that letter and not one word...I'd like to be off the hook...I guess they figure to eliminate some of the applicants...I have been stabbed by experts...[can you] take in an old umpire for a roommate. You have taken in a couple old bald headed catchers [Joe Garagiola and Slocum were close friends] so you can't do any worse with me...The suspense is getting me...just heard from the office today that I can open the season in N.Y. so tell them to crank up the camera real good...they are hiring ex coaches to train base Ball clubs now, toughen em up..." More content on baseball business, contracts, organizations, etc. Very good. $150-200
