GODFREY WEITZEL
(1835 - 1884) Union major general who commanded a division at Port Hudson and a corps during the Petersburg and Appomattox campaigns. War-date A.E.S. penned on the second page of a letter by Surgeon M. Burdick of the 37th N.Y. Vols, 2pp. 4to., Nov. 4, 1862, a request for the promotion of three officers. Weitzel approves the request, in full: ‘Lieut. Col. Merritt was a pupil of mine at the U.S. Military Academy and his regiment has been under my command more than a month, and lately in the field. I have never seen a better regiment. I heartily endorse everything that is said with reference to it and its officers in this communication. G. W. Weitzel Brig. Genl. U. S. Vols. Commd'g Reserve Brig Dept of the Gulf'. With an additional A.E.S. on the verso by BENJAMIN F. BUTLER (1818-1893), major general called ‘The Beast' for his authoritarian control of occupied New Orleans. He writes, in full: ‘I most heartily commend for promotion the officers mentioned. Their conduct both in camp and field full entitle them to this mark of confidence and respect. Benj. F. Butler Maj Genl'. Folds, otherwise very good.
