Description:

A fine, highly desirable Third Reich-era musical instrument, an aluminum lyre-shaped glockenspiel, approx. 51" x 21", with a single board of metal keys and upper arms decorated with the heads of eagles. Most notably, the instrument is topped with a solid aluminum national eagle over a wreathed and blackened swastika, approx. 10 1/2" x 9 1/2", as used on instruments of ceremonial bands of the SS. The eagle is fitted with a threaded mount at the base, which screws into the corresponding socket at the top of the instrument, and the reverse is marked "Ges. Gesch. Nr. 533". The set is rounded out by all the necessary accoutrements needed to utilize this glockenspiel during a parade, including two horsehair tassels, a mallet, and a short wooden pole which can be inserted into a socket in the base of the instrument, allowing it to rest in a carrier attached to the included black leather shoulder belt. The eagle topper shows some soiling, minor pitting and expected wear, with appreciable wear to the glockenspiel and associated accoutrements, very good overall.
