86. STATES RIGHTS GIST (1831 - 1864) Confederate brigadier general who commanded a division at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge, led his own brigade in the Atlanta campaign, killed in action leading his men at Franklin. Excessively rare war-date A.L.S., 1p. 4to., [Charleston, Nov. 4, 1861], to an Col. Edward Manigault. In full: "Colonel I dispatched the Governor & requested him to send the answer to you - I do not think you should go in the morning. There will be no one there, but Gen. Means[?] & he can return at any time. Yrs S. R. Gist". On verso appears a docket, likely in Manigault's hand: "Genl. Gist Charleston Nov. 4, 1861 Stating that there would be no meeting of Ordnance Board on Tuesday 5". Fine condition. When South Carolina seceded from the Union, Gist worked as state adjutant and inspector general: in this role, he acquired weaponry and mobilized manpower throughout the state. Also in this capacity, he rendered valuable service in the preparation for the occupation of Charleston harbor and the reduction of Fort Sumter.
