Rare and superb A.Ms.S., 1p. 4to., [n.p.], Oct. 23, 1963, a fine content anti-war poem penned on brown paper, in full: "Man is naked without secrets, armed men lack this joy! Carlson of the United Press during Madame Nhu's visit in October 1963. Carlson was a general reporter for UPI, assigned to cover the Palace Hotel demonstration of October 28. He had met Ginsberg before and, in a conversation on the sidewalk of New Montgomery Street in San Francisco in front of the Palace, Ginsberg asked Carlson to send a message by UPI Telex to Neil Sheehan, the UPI Bureau Chief in Saigon and later a Pulitzer Prize-winning author. Carlson agreed, and Ginsberg wrote out a note of greeting to Sheehan. In return, he penned this poem on Carlson's brown folded copy paper, as a gift. Five days after he penned this poem, Ginsberg would join in the Palace Hotel demonstration, held against Madame Nhu, the "First Lady" of Vietnam from 1955-1963 and sister-in-law of President Diem of South Vietnam. Her husband, Ngo Dinh Nhu, was his chief advisor, executed along with Diem in a palace coup on November 2, 1963, just a week after Ginsberg penned these prophetic lines. Folds, chipping to margins, and one hole at top right, clear of text. Simply framed, not examined out of frame. Certainly one of the finest Ginsberg examples we have seen! $1,500 - 2,000
