Description:

GIDEON J. PILLOW
(1806-1878) Confederate major general, who fought at Belmont and was second-in-command at Fort Donelson from which he fled to avoid capture by Grant. Fine Mexican War content A.L.S. 4pp. 4to., New Orleans, July 26, 1846, to an unnamed recipient, in part: ‘…I reached this city last night on my way to the Head Quarters of the Army. The [?] troops have all gone forward except Regiments of Cavalry…waiting for their arms…This arm of my brigade which is perhaps, in the kind of warfare we are likely to have, the most effective, will be mustered before it marches [into] the field for active operations. As all accounts from Head Quarters Genl. Lagdon [?]…to take up the line of march (though greatly different is land transport) for the interior of Mexico, we must advance a great way into the [?] country before that Regiment overtakes us. Without this and the Regiment of Kentucky Cavalry, Genl. Taylor's Army will be [?] in this arm of the service. It is now said and generally believed for sometime that the Mexicans were consolidating [?] their forces at Monterey, were fortifying that place and intended to resist any further invasions of the country. But recent advice induces the belief that the remnants of Arista's defeated army is at Lenares, a place some 30 miles west of Cormorgo of great natural strength from its location amidst the mountains…Before Genl. Taylor moves against Monterey, he will of course dislodge this force, otherwise…they will cut off his convoys and suppress and kidnap his men, and destroy all his magazine...This…will delay his operations and arrest his advance march for a while…his march will be onward and onward until he reaches the City of Mexico or is called back by the govt…Mexico can bring no force into the field which can arrest its progress…If we could find the enemy in the field, the work could soon be done, but this we should probably not be able to do…I am anxious to reach the Head Quarters of the army…'. More. Boldly penned with significant show through, making a few areas tough to read, professionally tipped to another page. Left edge slightly ragged from disbinding, else very good. Sold with a portrait engraving.
