Reynolds commanded on the field...he debouched from the cover of Oak Hill, directly upon the flank of the Union troops...Barlow and Shields divisions were ordered to form on the ridge...discovering that Rodes' division had already occupied Oak Hill...Reynolds was killed early in the engagement...Rodes advanced his right to the attack...".
