GETTYSBURG LETTER ON CONTRACT SURGEONSA rare war-date Gettysburg surgeon's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by the head of Camp Letterman Medical Director Henry Janes, Gettysburg, Pa., Aug. 24, 1863 to Medical Director William S. King concerning the contracts of various doctors who performed work at Gettysburg. In part: "...Dr. Smith has started for Vicksburg so that I cannot get him to alter his bill...his place was to be considered in the field...the rolls of the prisoners are finished & will be forwarded as directed...I enclose the contracts with Drs. Hanley & Leman. Dr. Winkoop was only here on duty one day and says that he does not propose to present a bill. He wrote me a few days ago that he had been drafted and that he would like to make a contract in order [to] avoid going as a conscript...I have been able to find no evidence of disloyalty against Shickells. Dr. Chamberlain says that he is a zealous worker and very attentive to his patients who are Union men...". From the personal archive Surgeon Henry Janes. Light soiling, else very good.
