Description:

A fine display piece bearing letters from two "saviors" of the Battle of Gettysburg, Col. Joshua Chamberlain and Gen. Gouverneur K. Warren. The first piece, from GOUVERNEUR K. WARREN (1830-1882), is an important content war-date A.L.S., 1p. 4to., "Hd. Qrs. 5th Regt. N.Y. Vols", Baltimore, Dec. 11, 1861, to Gen. Thomas Hillhouse, Adjutant General of New York. In part: "...In accordance with you communication...which reached me while on the Eastern Shore Expedition, I transmit herewith a letter from Gen. [Abram] Duryee informing you of the date of his commission as Brigadier, and also return my commission as Colonel...in order to have it made out from August 31 the date of the vacancy occasioned by Genl Duryee's promotion..." Very fine. Duryee has raised the 5th N.Y. Regt., "Duryee's Zouaves", which fought with distinction until disbanded after Chancellorsville. In this letter, Duryee has been promoted to brigadier general, Warren has assumed command of the zouaves, and requests his commission. The second letter is from JOSHUA CHAMBERLAIN (1828-1914), an A.L.S., 1p. 8vo. on his monogram letterhead, [Brunswick], Apr. 17, 1871 to a "Mr. Whitaker". In part: "...If possible I will be present on the 17th 17th. I cannot at this moment tell with certainty. Perhaps it would be best not to announce me, as I might be unable to keep the promise..." Fine. On the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, July 2, 1863, Warren initiated the defense of Little Round Top, recognizing the importance of the undefended position on the left flank of the Union Army, and directing, on his own initiative, the brigade of Col. Strong Vincent to occupy it just minutes before it was attacked. Chamberlain and his 20th Maine occupied the end of the line and valiantly repulsed repeated Alabamian attacks. The letters are individually double-matted in burgundy and white with glass on both sides. The reverse of one frame shows the 20th Maine monument at Little Round Top, the other frame allows one to view the docketing. These letters may be suspended from decorative hooks on a larger, single 28" x 30" mahogany and silver frame. That frame contains photo portraits of Warren and Chamberlain, a photo from the top of Little Round top, crossed flags, and an artist's image of Chamberlain leading a charge. A most impressive Gettysburg display!
