Description:

GETTYSBURG FARMERS MAKE CLAIMS FOR THE UNION ARMY'S DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY
Excellent manuscript D.S., 2pp. legal folio, [Gettysburg], Aug. 5, 1863, an: "Appraisement of damages sustained by John Bushman...by the Army of the Potomacduring the Battle of Gettysburg...", listing damage to six acres of corn, wheat and oats, the destruction of 320 wooden rails, general trampling of fields of grass, as well as the theft of various farm implements and "1 Pig taken". At bottom, Bushman's claim is attested to AS A "true valuation and appraisements". by fellow Gettysburg farmers GEORGE SPANGLER, WILLIAM YOUNG and GEORGE W. LIGHTNER. Bushman's farm was located on Baltimore Pike, about two miles from Gettysburg. The Lightner farmhouse was used as a Federal hospital following the battle, and today is an inn. Of course, the Spangler Farm is the most famous, located at what was the logistical center of the Union battle line. During and after the battle, the site also served as a field hospital, treating Union and Confederate wounded alike and providing the grounds for temporary interment of deceased soldiers. It was at the Spangler Farm that Confederate Gen. Lewis Armistead died of the wounds he suffered at the High Water Mark on July 3. He also was temporarily buried there. Text just a tad light, else very good.
