Description:

GETTYSBURG COLLEGE CLASS OF 1862
A superb photograph album containing 24 mounted albumens, each signed by the faculty, staff and students of the 1862 graduating class of Pennsylvania College in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The first free endpaper of the album features an additional albumen, an oval 7 1/4 x 5" landscape view of the college. Signed albumens include the faculty and staff of the college, all of whom were present during the Battle of Gettysburg including the president of the college from 1850 to 1868, H. L. BAUGHER who, during the battle, remained with his family inside the President's House tending to eighteen wounded Union soldiers. Also signed by M. JACOBS who was teaching mathematics the morning of July 1, 1863. Upon hearing shots from McPherson's Bridge, he dismissed his class and soon was escorting Union officers to the cupola to show them significant terrain in the area. Baugher's copious weather observations (taken three times daily) have been extensively consulted by historians attempting to recreate the battle. The album also includes the signature of Latin and literature professor M.L. STOEVER who tended to the wounded during the battle. The African-American janitor, JOHN HOPKINS, who signs his portrait with his mark, fled the vicinity with his family upon hearing of the Confederate advance to avoid potential kidnapping. Of the students included in the album, M. L. CULLER and H. E. JACOBS were known to have been present in Gettysburg during the battle. Another 1862 graduate, FREDERICK KLIEFELTER answered Gov. Andrew Curtin's call for reinforcements in June 1862 and joined Co. A of the 26th Pennsylvania Emergency Vol. Inf. and was elected its captain. On June 26, while marching west on the Chambersburg Pike, they were routed by veteran Confederate infantry. Many others, a truly rare assemblage of Gettysburg signatures. Front board detached, as is the flyleaf bearing the albumen of the college, albumens mostly in superb condition, overall very good condition.
