(GETTYSBURG) CHARLES E. HAZLETT
(1838 – 1863) U.S. Army first lieutenant who served at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Bull Run. He was killed on Little Round Top during the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg. While standing near a battery during the intense fighting, Brig. Gen. Stephen H. Weed was mortally wounded and asked to see Hazlett. Reportedly, Hazlett came to his aid and was shot in the head as he knelt down to hear what Weed was saying. Very rare war-date manuscript L.S., ‘Chas. E. Hazlett', 2pp. 4to., Battery D, 5th U.S. Artillery, Apr. 13, 1863, to HORATIO SEYMOUR (1810-1886), Governor of New York. In part: ‘…I have the honor to recommend to your favorable consideration for promotion in any of the Regiments or Batteries of your state, Edward C. Parkinson a corporal of the 44th N. Y. Vols but attached to this battery. He was temporarily attached to this battery in the fall of 1861, and has remained with it till the present time. During the Siege of Yorktown, he was promoted to be a corporal in the battery for gallant conduct. He has been in the following engagements, in all of which his conduct was worthy of praise – Yorktown, Hanover Court House, Gaines Mill, Malverne [sic], Groveton or Bull Run, Antietam, and Fredericksburgh [sic] – Corporal Parkinson is well acquainted both with the practical & Theoretical duties of both an infantry and an artillery officer. I have examined him in the tactics of both arms and found him very proficient…' Endorsed by CHARLES GRIFFIN (1825-1867), Union major general who fought from Bull Run to Appomattox, leading a division at Gettysburg and in the pursuit of Lee after Petersburg. This letter was written only one week before the Battle of Chancellorsville. Lightly stained with folds and creases, otherwise very good.
