Description:

GETTYSBURG BATTLE FLAG RELIC OF THE 121ST PA. VOLS.
A semi-cohesive collection of fringe and red cloth relics from the regimental battle flag of the 121st Pennsylvania Regt. clipped as a souvenir by Cpl. James Slyloff who enlisted in August, 1862 and served until May 13, 1865. The remnants still bears an attached portion of a paper tag identifying them 'This is a piece of the [Pa.?] 121st Regt. flag' with a small pencil note from the same time reading: 'This is a Piece of the Flag of the 121 Regt, PV Vols'. The flag relic is accompanied by a retained carbon of a 1973 letter send by Mrs. Nelson Behler to the Department of the Army asking for details om the service of her great grandfather, James Slyloff, and presumably the source of this relic. With some apparently family-related ephemera. Also included is Behler's 13pp. 4to. typed transcript of the diary which mentions Gettysburg and other battles in which he participated, but otherwise unremarkable. The flags of the 121st Pennsylvania saw some of the worst battles of the Civil War: Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg where it fought with distinction on the extreme right of Wadsworth's line and taking 65% casualties. On the following two days, the regiment faced heavy cannonades, the last days its fortifications were smashed and more casualties taken. The regiment later fought in the Overland Campaign and at Petersburg.
