GESTAPO HEADQUARTERS FLAG FROM REGENSBURG, GERMANY
An important captured German flag, the large NSDAP flag taken from the Gestapo Headquarters in Regensburg, Germany by an American soldier and brought to the U.S. in 1945. The cotton flag measures approx. 8 x 12 feet with a reinforced hoist with hauling cord sewn within. The flag is of two-piece construction, with the white circular field with black printed swastika applied to either side of the red dyed field. There is some minor staining and some scattered loss of material in the body of the flag, still overall very good. A hoist clip which separated from the lines on the hoist is also present. The flag is accompanied by a letter of provenance by Lee Humiston, Director/Curator of the Maine Military Museum. Humiston writes, in part: '...[the flag is] a U.S. Army veteran bring back from Germany and was combat captured. It was flying over the building housing Gestapo headquarters in Regensburg...It has remained in private hands since WWII...The flag was captured by an MP/M/Sgt. who was apointed chief of the Regensburg police force under the occupation using U.S. Army and former German police forces...' Also present is a large descriptive card in black mat, likely used when the flag was displayed.
