Description:

1525. GEORGE GERSHWIN (1898 - 1937) American composer and songwriter in collaboration with his brother Ira, his works include "Porgy and Bess", "Rhapsody in Blue", and "An American in Paris". Very fine content T.L.S. 1p. 4to., New York, Oct. 14, 1932, to a fan, Mrs. Kuper, in part: "...I believe you are mistaken in my Rumba, as it has never been broadcast over the radio, its first and only performance to date being at the Lewisohn Stadium August 16th. The composition is purely the outcome of a personal impression, as I have made no research into Cuban music and Cuban instruments beyond acquainting myself with those necessary for my composition...". In 1932, following the death of his father, Gershwin took a brief vacation in Havana, and found the local music intriguing. He returned to New York with a new beat in his head and some native instruments in hand for authenticity, and endeavored to "combine the Cuban rhythms with my own thematic material. The result is a symphonic overture which embodies the essence of the Cuban dance" (cf. Gershwin's commentary in the program for the first performance of "Rumba"). Though somewhat overshadowed by his earlier compositions such as Rhapsody in Blue and American in Paris, "Rumba" was Gershwin's last purely compositional work. More importantly, "Rumba" was Gershwin's attempt at recreating the music and atmosphere of another culture, and its influence was certainly made present in his crowning achievement "Porgy and Bess". Folds, boldly signed, very good condition. $1,000 - 1,500
