(1797 “ 1874) Leading abolitionist, politician, and social reformer from New York. Member of the Secret Six who financially supported John Brown's raid at Harpers Ferry, in 1859. Excellent lot of four printed letters and transcribed speeches from Gerrit Smith. First, in a letter to New York Governor Horatio Seymour, Smith criticizes the governor's support for the Crittenden Compromise and other pro-slavery actions. Contains original edits in black ink above the typeface. 4pp., 8 x 12.25 in., Petersboro, January 12, 1863. Minor folds towards rear pages, else fine. Second, Smith speaks before the New York Anti-Slavery Society about their right to discuss slavery. 2pp., 8 x 12.25 in., Petersboro, October 22, 1835. Minor folding, else fine. Third, Smith addresses the town of Smithfield. 2pp., 8 x 12.25 in., Petersboro, October 6, 1862, with original edits in black ink above the typeface. Fourth, Smith writes of McClellan's nomination for the presidency. 4pp., 8 x 12.25 in., Petersboro, Sept. 14, 1864. Staining and minor folding throughout, yet print is still legible. Good condition.
