Description:

GERRIT SMITH SENDS A STRAND OF ABOLITIONIST THOMAS CLARKSON'S HAIR
(1797 - 1874) American abolitionist and politician, a supporter of John Brown who likely knew in advance of the attack on Harper's Ferry. A great association item, a signed 24mo. note sent to an admirer, Aug. 8, 1866, in part: "Clarkson sent locks of his hair to me. Attached to this paper is a single hair from one of them. Gerrit Smith". Beneath a tiny binding slip a single hair is evident. THOMAS CLARKSON (1760-1846) was an English abolitionist and a leading campaigner against the slave trade. He helped found the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade and helped achieve passage of the Slave Trade Act of 1807, which ended British trade in slaves. In his later years Clarkson campaigned for the abolition of slavery worldwide; it was then concentrated in the Americas.
