Description:

GERMAN WORLD WAR II M40 KRIEGSMARINE HELMET
Iconic German steel helmet showing a smooth matte finish in field green, applied over the original gray color. The left-hand side bears the gold Kriegsmarine-style Third Reich national eagle decal, also showing evidence of there being a previous gold colored eagle decal originally applied under this additional field green camo paint layer. The interior of the helmet shows original gray color in the crown, with a wide band of thin cardboard present in crown, oriented left to right and into the liner. We have not removed it, nor do we know the purpose of this cardboard or who inserted it, but it is old and well fitted to the helmet. Shell is stamped 'Q64' on the left-hand skirt near the rim, indicating that it was manufactured by F.W. Quist in Esslingen, and is a size 64 shell. Also shows the batch number '19782' on the rear skirt. Painted in white paint to the rear skirt is the name 'Zapf.', additionally showing the initials 'W.Z.' scratched into the finish in the same area. The eight-finger brown leather liner, size-stamped '57', is fully intact showing only minor cracks, with two small tears or breaks in the leather to the front brow area, drawstring is missing. The leather chinstrap intact with all hardware present, brown on under side and black on the exposed side, and appears to be unmarked, strap missing a small portion from the loose end, although very close to full length. Exterior of the helmet shows honest wear with the typical scratches, scrapes and dings overall, in some places exposing the original gray finish underneath, else very good.
