Description:

GERMAN WORLD WAR II CHOLM SHIELD
A rare Cholm Campaign Shield. This version of the shield is known as the 'short M' version, 39 mm wide x 65 mm high, with obverse showing a German Heer (Army) national eagle, clutching an Iron Cross, situated above the raised text 'CHOLM 1942'. Shield is unmarked, made of zinc, and is non-magnetic. Reverse showing only one of it's original three pins remaining. During the Russian counter attack of 1942, German forces were surrounded in town of Cholm with 5,500 men being trapped in a small pocket and surrounded by three Russian divisions between January and May, when they were ultimately relieved. This award was designed by the commanding officer Generalmajor Theodor Scherer, and another officer while still trapped. With the shield finally being issued in July 1942 and awarded to those who had survived the encirclement. This example, in worn condition with minute traces of silver wash showing in some of the various deeper recesses around eagle and text. No backing plate or cloth backing present. Otherwise good condition.
