Description:

Very rare and unusual plaque depicting a German National Sports Badge, 11.5 x 15 x 2 in., excavated at Carenten, Normandy. The plaque is constructed of iron and bears an outer ring of oak leaves, with the remnants of the monogrammed initials 'D.R.L' at center, a ribbon, and a (since detached) swastika at the bottom. The verso even bears a vertical strip of metal, welded just at the top and loose at the bottom, mimicking the vertical pin of the badge. This plaque was presumably used at German sporting events, or perhaps displayed on an official government building in town. Quite oxidized with some of the monogram absent, the plaque is in relic condition. Sold with a scanned note of provenance from Xavier Derule, originally written in French on Feb. 2, 1983, who found this relic, and many others offered in this sale, near the town of Carentan during clearance works. During the D-Day invasion, the town of Carentan saw a week-long engagement between the 101st Airborne Division and the German Wehrmacht, as the American paratroopers struggled to reinforce the Utah and Omaha Beachheads and establish a defensive line against German counterattacks.
