Description:

GERMAN SOLDIERS' PHOTO-COLLAGE PORTRAITS
Group of four uniquely-created portraits of pre-World War I German soldiers. Includes: ornate color lithograph, 16" x 21", commemorating the military service of one Moser, comprised of multiple colorful scenes, surrounding the main portrait of the soldier. These scenes portray a typical soldier's life, and depict their training, guard duty, celebrations while on leave, and life in camp, culminating in an elaborate battle scene at the bottom, in which German infantry, artillery, and cavalry assault a small town and castle. The portrait in the center depicts the soldier in uniform, with his rifle and tasseled helmet, above the motto: "Einigkeit mach Stark" ("Unity is Strength"). Most interestingly, while the rest of the work is a color lithograph, the soldier's face is a carefully cropped and applied original black and white photograph of Moser. These prints were mass-produced with blank faces, allowing the individual soldier's who purchased them to easily personalize them. At the top of the print are images of Kaiser Wilhelm II and two military leaders. The bottom gives Moser's rank as Grenadier, and lists his regiment, giving his service period as 1901 to 1903. The edges of the piece are chipped, and a 3" tear is present at the left edge. Moderately toned throughout, else good. WITH: color lithograph, 13 1/2" x 17 1/4", commemorating the military service of a G. Mogel. The print depicts the soldier, in uniform, standing before a classical balustrade, with a pastoral scene of a church and a fishing pond in the background. While the rest of the print is a color lithograph, the soldier's face is a carefully cropped and applied original black and white photograph of Mogel. The title at the top gives his service year as 1874. The top of the print also features portraits of Kaiser Wilhelm I and two military leaders. Moderate toning, with small pinholes at the top margin and lower left quadrant, else very good. WITH: Ornate color lithograph, 17 1/4" x 20 1/2", commemorating the military service of an artillery officer named Worner. The print depicts the officer, in uniform, with saber drawn, astride a galloping horse, with scenes of artillery maneuvers in the background. While the rest of the print is a color lithograph, the soldier's face is a carefully cropped and applied original black and white photograph. The print is matted in grey, on which is the title: "Zur Erinerrung an das Kaisermanover 1909" ("In memory of Imperial Maneuvers, 1909"), as well as the name of Worner's artillery regiment and his service date, from 1908-1910. Minor toning, else very good. WITH: Ornate color lithograph, 14 1/2" x 18 1/2", commemorating the military service of a F. Streble. The print depicts two soldiers standing on a balcony, with scenes of a railroad and canal boats in the background. Most interestingly, while the rest of the print is a color lithograph, both soldiers' faces are carefully cropped and applied original black and white photographs of Streble, essentially forming a double portrait. The top of the print bears a portrait of Kaiser Wilhelm I. Moderate toning, with two 1" tears at the left edge. Framed, very good.
