Description:

GERMAN SOLDIERS' GROUP PORTRAITS
Group of two portraits depicting groups of pre-World War I German soldiers. Includes: large and elaborate albumen photograph portrait, 10 1/2" x 16 1/2" b/w, depicting a reserve unit of 63 soldiers and officers, based in Strasburg. The subjects are arranged on a series of risers in a number of poses; some are seated around tables, clutching mugs of hot chocolate with large dollops of cream and dressed in barracks uniforms, while others wear full field gear, with packs and pickelhaube-style helmets, bearing Model 1888 rifles with bayonets affixed. Musicians in the front pose with their drums and bugles; on either side of them are bicycle troops with their mounts. The officers sit at the center, holding their swords. Many of the men hold cigarettes, while at the center is a keg of beer, adding to the festive atmosphere. Placed throughout the group are plaques listing their unit and displaying its coat of arms. The photograph is affixed to a light blue paperboard mount, 17" x 23 1/2", which gives each soldier's name, and is decorated with a variety of military symbols and mottoes. Minor toning to the mount, else very good. WITH: Albumen photograph portrait, 7" x 9" b/w, depicting a group of fifteen soldiers. The subjects are arranged in three rows, standing and seated in chairs and on the floor. Three of the subjects have beer steins close at hand. The photograph is mounted on a grey paperboard backing, which bears the title: "Zur Erinnerung an unsere Dienstzeit" ("In Memory of Our Service"). Minor toning to the mount, else very good.
