GERMAN SOLDIER'S CHINESE AND JAPANESE PHOTOGRAPH ALBUMS (2)
Nice grouping of two photo albums, likely belonging to two different German soldiers during their service in German-occupied China and Japan. The first album is 13 x 9.5 in. with the boards covered in green felt, a light brown stitched-on ornate design featured on the front cover, containing a total of 52 b/w photos. Images include: inland port of Tsuruga, Japan; shrines; sailors posing on a ship propeller; Chinese soldiers posing with their weapons; a line of decapitated Chinese men, their executioners posing in the background; Chinese sailboats; Buddha statues; Chinese women in classic garb; a harem seen through bars; locals going about their chores in cities; stunning aerial views and more. The second cloth-covered album, 10.75 x 9.25 in., contains 146 b/w photos, most approx. 4 x 6 in. This album belonged to German soldier Alfred Dietz, photos taken during his service and leave in Tsingtao, China and Kurume, Japan. Images include: photo of Dietz in uniform; Chinese locals posing outside of their homes, smoking opium, etc.; acrobatic performances; sports competition in Kurume; local women posing in kimonos; group photos of German soldiers; Japanese ship ‘Himalaya Maru'; Dietz's arrival in Germany and more. The back panel bears a small card giving a brief biography on Dietz. He was born in 1893 and served in the Imperial Navy 3rd Sea Battalion, Kiel in China. Spent five years in captivity starting in 1915 in Kurume, Japan, later returning to Germany by way of the Himalaya Maru. Dietz died in action during World War II in Yugoslavia, only eight days after the German surrender. Two pieces, fine.
