Description:

Fine content photo album bearing approx. 200 original photographs from a German soldier within the Polizei Battalion 319, which fought on the Eastern Front for much of the war. One of the most complete and well-captioned albums we have seen from the Eastern Front, just a small sampling of the notable images includes: German soldiers in cold-weather gear, huddling in trenches and using binoculars surrounded by snow; six original images of makeshift graveyards of German soldiers, each with snowy ground, captioned with the number of dead, missing, and wounded from the regiment; wrecked and broken-down tanks in the snow-covered landscape; a burning village in the Demjansk Pocket; an image of a German soldier at a typewriter, marked with and 'x' and captioned 'Bubi' dies 14 days after this...'; an original photograph of a flaming wreck of a warplane, captioned 'Shot'; an original photograph of German soldiers trekking through dense forest, captioned 'Through Forest and Swamp'; original photographs of war-torn and bombed-out cities, including Riga and Vienna. Later pages show his service in Norway from 1944 to 1945, including an image of a mass grave of German soldiers, captioned beneath: '185 battalion members are resting Nov. 1944 in Trieste...The rest of the battle was between 12.4. and 30.4.45...up to 45 men rubbed out....' The following page bears some photographs of the frozen corpses of his recently K.I.A. comrades. Most images remain securely adhered to the pages, and some which are beginning to come loose appear to have been annotated on the verso. Some pages disbound, else very good.
