Description:

GERMAN RAILWAY EAGLE
A very large and impressive cast aluminum alloy railway eagle, 35.25 in. x 15.5 in. A representation of the Third Reich national eagle with its wings spread, clutching a wreathed swastika in its talons. Thought to be the largest version of railroad eagle, this eagle looks to have originally had a high-polish finish, but there is a distinct possibility for reasons unknown, this eagle was at one point gilded, as some of the top surfaces, wing tips, and deeper crevices are showing traces of a gold finish, which does not appear to have been a casual paint finish. On the verso are the original material composition marks ‘(Pa) GAL-Mg-Si', indicating that the eagle is made of Galvanized Aluminum (Gal), Magnesium (Mg), and Silicon (Si). Also present, 'RZA 7. BLN', which stands for 'Reich Zug Adler 7 (Train Eagle 7) Berlin', with the maker mark of ‘BRNO' within a square lined box on the rear of the swastika portion, indicating production in a Czech factory. This example also retains remnants of the three original attachment points, which were once injection cones turned down and threaded, but now showing where the eagle had been cut free. Some remaining train engine soot shows as thick smudges to the front in crevices, with the reverse showing heavy train soot throughout, also the right wing being slightly bent with small crack at the attachment point from being removed from train, otherwise very good. A fabulous example! The photos simply do not do this eagle justice.
