Description:

Good lot of four Third Reich-era card "spinners", released as promotional materials for various businesses and serving as propaganda for the NSDAP's view of foreign affairs. Includes: printed "spinner", approx. 4 3/4" x 6 1/4", entitled "Der Vertrag von Versailles" ("The Treaty of Versailles") and presenting a map showing the range of German-speaking peoples within Europe and the nations borders in 1918. The card contains a rotating wheel secured with a metal rivet; when this wheel is rotated, various former German territories are highlighted in red, with a window at the bottom denoting which nation claimed which amount of German land following her defeat in World War I. At bottom appears an advertisement for a bank in the town of Lennep, while the verso bears a student's timetable partially filled out with black ink, and a printed ruler. WITH: A second "spinner", also 4 3/4" x 6 1/4", entitled "Deutschlands Nachbarn in Waffen" ("Germany's Neighbors in Weapons") and displaying a map of Germany in relation to the rest of western Europe. Turning the wheel displays the numbers of various military assets fielded by Germany's immediate neighbors, including numbers of submarines, cruisers and destroyers, heavy artillery, warplanes, tanks, etc. An advertisement for a chain of grocery stores appears at bottom, again with a blank student's timetable on the verso. Both of the preceding pieces are marked at the bottom as being published by Lindner G.m.b.H of Berlin-Schoneberg. WITH: Larger card "spinner", 5 1/2" x 8", celebrating the 1936 Olympics and advertising the Julius Botzow brewery of Berlin. The wheel in this case is printed with the flags of each nation participating in the Olympic games; when turned to highlight a particular flag, the window also displays its name and the number of gold, silver and bronze medals it won during the games. The verso is printed with the records held for each event in previous games, with a blank space for the owner to fill in the records for the 1936 games. WITH: "spinner" entitled "Europa in Zahlen" ("Europe in Numbers"), 5" x 6 1/2", once more featuring a map of Western Europe, and displaying various statistics for Germany's neighbors when the wheel is turned, including number of cars per capita, number of merchant vessels, acreage of undeveloped lands, etc. This example is split at the top edge, with the adhesive at bottom peeled away allowing the card to be opened. The remainder show slight toning, else very good.
