Description:

A scarce World War I propaganda publication, "German Prisoners in Great Britain" (London: Tillotson & Son, Ltd.), [n.d., circa 1916], 62pp. 4to., containing photos taken by the photographic section of the Royal Flying Corps, depicting the comfortable living conditions enjoyed by German prisoners held in six of the largest P.O.W. camps in Britain. The sleeping quarters, recreational facilities, and support areas of each camp is thoroughly cataloged with numerous views of prisoners carving and racing model boats, playing soccer and other sports, gardening, baking, reading, and generally leading peaceful lives in captivity. A foreword states that the photos were taken in response to a request from the American ambassador in Berlin for exhibition during an exhibition in Stuttgart. It stresses that the prisoners appearing in the images all gave their consent to be photographed, and contrasts the scenes depicted with the poor conditions allegedly face by prisoners in German camps. Shows some minor splitting to the binding within the first few pages, with a tear to the original dust jacket repaired with cello tape, else very good. Provenance: The War Museum, New York.
