Description:

Good collection of eleven pencil sketches, executed by a German prisoner of war held by the Soviet Army at Dollersheim, Austria, immediately after World War II. The largest, 7 ½" x 5 ¼", depicts a portion of the barbed wire perimeter fence of the camp, with barracks and a large Soviet flag visible beyond. This sketch is inscribed and dated “Dollersheim 8.7.45” at bottom right. The balance of the sketches, all 3” x 4 ¼", depict the artist’s fellow prisoners, with attention paid to the details of their clothing, and with one depicting a cooking scene. The smalle sketches appear to have been executed on the excised pages of a pocket diary. The verso of the larger sketch, and the blank space of the recto and verso of the smaller examples, are all completely filled with recipes in German. The sketches have been tabbed to newer pages and bound in paper boards, with a pencil map affixed to the cover indicating that the owner was first held in Passau in German, and was then transferred first to Budweis (modern Ceské Budejovice) in Czechoslovakia, and then finally to Dollersheim, where he remained between June and August of 1945. The covers show some bumps to the edges, while the sketches are in very good to fine condition.
