GERMAN OLYMPIC HONOR MEDAL, FIRST CLASS, WITH DOCUMENT
Rare 1936 German Olympic Honor Medal, First Class, with the corresponding award document issued to a future Wehrmacht general and Knights Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords recipient. The award is a constructed out of two pieces of die struck tombak base that has been fire gilded. It bears white enamel work including the five Olympic rings above a five-pointed white star surmounting five golden lined bars, all below a white German National eagle. The gold full back reverse shows two rivets that attach the Olympic rings. To the top is an integral ring and soldered loop that has approximately 18 inches of the appropriate red, white and black rayon ribbon. The ribbon shows thread from previously having been sewn to a garment. The award measures 2 3/8 inches wide by 2 3/4 inches tall. The award comes housed in its appropriate fitted case, along with the rare .75 in. miniature of this same medal. The medal was awarded on February 4th 1936 and was bestowed on only 746 leading German nationals and foreign figures for very special merit in the management of the 1936 Olympic Games. Also present is the rarely-seen original award document, 1p. 4to., Berlin, Nov. 30, 1936, signed in facsimile by Adolf Hitler and presenting the medal to 'Oberst i.G. Hans Reinhardt'. Three pieces, fine. Georg-Hans Reinhardt (1887–1963) was a German general and one of only 22 members of the Olympic Central Committee to receive this award. He would command the 3rd Panzer Army from 1941 to 1944, and Army Group Centre in 1944 and 1945, reaching the rank of colonel general and receiving the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. Reinhardt was found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity, including murder and mistreatment of Soviet prisoners of war, and of murder, deportation, and hostage-taking of civilians in occupied countries. He was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment, and served time in the Landsberg Prison.
