Description:

GERMAN OFFICER'S PHOTO ALBUM OF PERSECUTED JEWS
An intriguing photo album, 50pp. oblong 8vo., with approx. 100 b/w 2.5 x 3.5 in. photographs pasted within. The album was owned by a Luftwaffe officer, one ‘Oblt. Dauber' during his service in Poland. Near the center of the album is a hand-drawn anti-Semitic caricature of an overweight Jewish man smoking a cigar with the caption ‘What kinds of thoughts does he have?' There are also images showing Polish Jews wearing ragged clothing with demeaning captions, such as ‘Touch at your own risk', a photo of a Jew with a painted Star of David and ‘Jude' upon his back, gatherings of various soldiers and high-ranking local officials, various aerial photographs, Italian aviator Italo Balbo, etc. A number of the photos, especially of the Jews, were taken in Chmielnik. Before the Second World War, over 80% of the 12,000 inhabitants were Jews. After capturing the town in 1939 the Germans slowly discriminated against the Polish and Jewish population, which swelled during the war as Jews fled from other towns arrived at Chmielnik. Over several months Germans transported Jews to concentration camps, mainly Treblinka, where they were murdered. The Germans also deported over 1,600 people for forced labor, and, still in Chmielnik, carried out executions of Poles and Jews from the town as well as from other places. Just after the war, only four Jewish residents residing in the town had survived. Fine.
