Description:

An article in German from the newspaper 'New Day', 2pp. 12.5 x 18.5 in., Prague, May 2, 1945, titled 'The Leader fell in battle'. In part: '...The German people...heard the news of the heroic death of their leader, Adolf Hitler, with deepest shock...Hitler was the soul of the resistance...against Bolshevism, which armed for more than two decades in order to push the communist world revolution forward over Germany's corpse to Western Europe and the rest of the world...Hitler fell for Germany, for Europe, for mankind and humanity. His sacrificial death cannot and must not be in vain...' The article goes on to explain that Admiral Karl Donitz was chosen by Hitler before his demise to be his successor. Donitz gave a speech to the German people over the radio just a day before, and is quoted in the article, in part: '...Our Fuhrer Adolf Hitler has fallen...He had recognized the terrible danger of Bolshevism early on and devoted his life to this struggle...The leader has chosen me to be his successor...My first task is to save the German people from annihilation at the hands of the advancing Bolshevik enemy...' Also quoted is the speech given by Donitz to the Wehrmacht, where he explains his intentions to continue the fight against the Bolsheviks as well as the British and Americans for as long as they stand in his way, finishing with a demand for total obedience. Despite his attempts to carry on and prevail Germany was forced to surrender to the Allies only five days later, May 7, 1945. Folds, light toning at edges and a few minor tears, else fine.
