Description:

Lot of three items signed by German naval heroes of World War I, includes: OTTO HERSING (1885-1960) German Korvettenkapitan, a U-boat commander who, in September 1914, became famous for the first sinking of an enemy ship by a self-propelled torpedo. D.S., Hersing, in pencil, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d. (December 1917), in German. The partially printed document, completed in ink in an unidentified hand, refers to the submarine U-21 and the work to overhaul her in the Royal Dockyard at Kiel in December 1917; PAUL KOENIG (1867-1933) German kapitanleutnant with the Imperial German Navy who made two patrols to the U.S. for commercial purposes with the merchant submarine Deutschland in 1916. A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Cristobal C.Z. (Panama), Apr. 5, 1932, sends thanks for the courtesies shown to him during his visit to the U.S., adding “I also express my earnest wish to have the opportunity of again seeing my friends and acquaintances either in your country or in Bremen”; and KARL MEUSEL (1881-1941) German kapitanleutnant, a U-boat commander responsible for sinking 19 ships. A manuscript questionnaire completed by Meusel, unsigned, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d. (1920), in German. The document comprises eleven questions prepared by Erwin Albrecht of Berlin, apparently relating to the merchant submarine U-155 during World War I, each of the questions followed with a brief answer in the hand of Meusel. Accompanied by the original envelope signed by Meusel to the verso in the return address panel. Very good.
