Description:

GERMAN MINER'S PRESENTATION HAMMER AND COAL CAR
An extraordinarily attractive pair of items presented to a German miner upon his retirement, and undoubtedly made by one of the premier sword or dagger makers in Germany. The first piece is a 11" long wood-handled miner's hammer with a 6 1/8" expertly-worked head. The head and chiseling point each have two bands of highly-detailed oak leaves and acorns, and every leaf and acorn cap has been individually pebbled - an enormous undertaking. The leaves are gilded and the backgrounds bear a blue-black contrasting finish. Bordering the bands of oak leaves are four borders of circular indents, each gilt, and those borders are in turn surrounded by bands with a wave-like blue designs. On the obverse there appears a rectangular panel filled with a similar ornate design of oak leaves, acorns, and dot designs, and at the center appears the expression: "GLOCK AUF!" "Good Luck!" flanking a pair of crossed miner's hammers. On the reverse is the archaic expression: "WO KUOLEN LIEGT UNEKEN WASST DO WASST OK LU DE DOBI PASST" which very loosely translates to: 'Where there is iron and oaks trees grow, there are also people who are made of the same". The hammer's face bears the letter "e" surrounded by gold trim, while the base of the neck bears the "Zwilling" maker's mark of knife manufacturer J. A. Henckels of Solingen. Some negligible surface pitting is mentioned only for accuracy. Sold with a second gift given to the same miner: a 4 1/2" tall steel model of a four-wheeled mining wagon on two rails, the wagon filled with ore upon which rests a miner's lamp and sledge hammer. The rails are attached to wood ties which are in turn affixed to a black wood base. A fine presentation!
