Description:

GERMAN MAP OF ARTILLERY EMPLACEMENTS ON GOLD, JUNO AND SWORD BEACHES
Excellent, rarely encountered German map depicting coastal artillery defenses of the Normandy shores north of Caen and German counter-measures, a field-used folding map prepared by mounting sections of an existing French map to a linen or cloth backing. The map depicts the Normandy coastline and almost all of the British landing beaches GOLD, JUNO and SWORD, from Le Hamel to Houlgate. A hasty ink notation at top reads: "Ia./Pi. Nr. 11/43". Approximately 40 shore batteries, observation posts and command centers have been carefully drawn, colored, and labeled in black ink, almost 20 in the immediate area of Ouistreham. East and west boundaries of the sector are also delineated. The map also bears hasty pencil additions made at two distinctly later times, largely in the west in the area of Colombiers and points north. The western boundary of the sector is redrawn several miles to the east, and a southern "front" is added, no doubt accounting for British advances inland following the initial landings. A superb piece that graphically illustrates the desperate German reaction to the massive D-Day landings.
